School of Engineering

Biological and Biotechnological Chemistry

Its activity focuses on the identification and molecular analysis of proteins and enzymes as therapeutic targets, together with the design and application of enzymes in biocatalysis and biotechnology with microorganisms.

MANAGER:

Bioprocess Pilot Plant

Bioprocessing infrastructure and equipment for the development, optimisation, scale-up and manufacturing of test batches. Suitable for microorganisms cultures (bacteria, yeasts and fungi) in batch and fed-batch and in aerobic or anaerobic conditions. Class 1 organisms (non-pathogenic). Includes downstream operations for the first stages of bioproduct isolation.

Biochemistry Laboratory

The Biochemistry Laboratory focuses its research on Carbohydrate Active Enzymes (CAZymes) involved in the biosynthesis, modification and degradation of glycans and glycoconjugates, from fundamental aspects of their mechanism, specificity and regulation to their applications in biocatalysis, synthetic biology and as therapeutic targets in infectious diseases.

LATEST PROJECTS

Glycoengin (Engineered Glycozymes in biocatalysis, metabolic engineering and bio-orthogonal chemical biology)

Application of Carbohydrate Active Enzyme (or Glycozymes) by means of protein engineering and metabolic engineering to the generation of technological tools in glycoscience and the production of high-value glicoconjugates for health, nutraceuticals and food sectors.
