Biochemistry Laboratory
The Biochemistry Laboratory focuses its research on Carbohydrate Active Enzymes (CAZymes) involved in the biosynthesis, modification and degradation of glycans and glycoconjugates, from fundamental aspects of their mechanism, specificity and regulation to their applications in biocatalysis, synthetic biology and as therapeutic targets in infectious diseases.
The laboratory covers disciplines from Chemistry, Biology and Engineering to address its R&D projects in glycosciences with applications in biotechnology and biomedicine.
- Biocatalysis: development of processes and enzymes for the enzymatic synthesis of value-added products
- Protein engineering: approaches to rational and targeted evaluation
- Bioinformatics and molecular modelling
- Metabolic engineering for metabolite production
- Use of enzymes in the synthesis of bioactive products and pharmaceutical intermediates
